Marietta Market Hits the Ground Running Opening Sunday June 13th
Marietta, PA, June 9, 2010 – Though questions were raised about the urgency of the Marietta Market proposal, the Marietta Borough Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve use of Flanagan Park for an open air farmers market. Marietta Market, featuring local foods and handcrafted goods, will open Sunday, June 13 from 9 AM to 2 PM at Front and Pine Streets and take place every Sunday thereafter (rain or shine, with the exception of July 4) through October 31.
“With over a dozen vendors responding and many volunteers, it all came together very quickly,” says Lauren Burnett, co-market master. “Because we’re now entering the local growing season, we all had a real sense of urgency to make this available to everyone in the community.”
Customers can expect to find local heirloom produce and fruit, honey, plants and herbs, fresh baked breads and pastries, coffee and tea, fresh flowers, recycled glass jewelry, handmade soaps and body products, prepared organic Ethiopian food and cooking demonstrations and much more.
Fellow market master, Katie Martin, adds, “The market will not only provide customers with access to local food and goods, but also with different educational activities throughout the season such as weed walks and composting workshops.”
Opening day festivities will include music by the Cultivators, Vinegar Creek Constituency and others, face painting for the kids and demonstrations on composting and rain barrels throughout the day.
Vendors include Culton Organics, Dig It!, Althouse Fruits, Lower Susquehanna Valley Permaculture, Homegrown Edible Landscaping, Florist Susannah Smith and Chestnut Hill Café, among others.
